It’s been a unique start to Term 2, with several public holidays and our Curriculum Day last Friday. On this day, our staff joined colleagues from schools across the archipelago to participate in a professional learning workshop facilitated by Berry Street. This was a valuable opportunity to further build our capacity to support student wellbeing and engagement through trauma-informed practice.
Next week marks the end of our string of short weeks, with full weeks of learning ahead—except for the King’s Birthday public holiday on Monday 9 June.
A huge congratulations to all students who participated in the Athletics Carnival yesterday! Your sportsmanship, determination, encouragement of peers, and team spirit made us all incredibly proud. A special thank you to Mr Peter Molnar for leading the organisation of the event, and to all staff who supported students to ensure the day ran smoothly. Congratulations to the Redback House for taking out the win this year! Go Redbacks!
Next week we begin our Swimming and Water Safety program. Please refer to the timetable below to see when your child is scheduled to swim. Students will need to bring:
A towel
Sunsmart swimmers
Goggles
A wet/dry bag
Next Friday is Walk Safely to School Day! We encourage all students to join the walk to school and help raise awareness around the importance of road safety, physical activity, and environmental care. Students who walk safely to school will be treated to a warm toasty on arrival!
It’s been wonderful to see yard cards being handed out in full force. Students are being recognised for upholding our school values during playtimes—keep it up students, and keep celebrating their successes, families!
Infrastructure Updates
The Year 2/3 classroom rebuild is progressing well. Carpet is scheduled to be laid this week, and new air conditioning units are due for installation at the end of May. We remain on track for a mid-year completion, which means 2/3 students will soon be back in their learning space.
The Early Childhood building air conditioner has been out of action due to damage caused by a rat entering the system. Replacement parts have been ordered and are en route to Darwin. We expect repair works to be completed by mid next week.
As mentioned in our recent SeeSaw update, CCTV cameras have now been installed around the external areas of the school buildings. This initiative is part of our ongoing efforts to improve reduce instances of vandalism occurring after hours. We appreciate the support of our school community in helping maintain a safe and respectful environment for all.
To finish, a very Happy Mother’s Day to all of our wonderful mums, grandmothers, aunties and special people in the lives of our students. If you're free on Saturday, we encourage you to head down to the Arcade to support the amazing stallholders at the CWA Ladies Market. I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Athletics Carnival
What an incredible day of sport, spirit, and school pride! Our annual Alyangula Area School Athletics Carnival was held last week, and it was fantastic to see students of all ages giving it their all on the track and field.
From the early years to the senior students, we witnessed outstanding displays of determination, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Whether it was sprinting to the finish line, cheering from the sidelines, or stepping out of their comfort zone to have a go—our students made us incredibly proud.
A huge congratulations to all who participated and earned points for their teams. And a special thank you to Mr Peter Molnar for organising the event, and to all the staff who supported to ensure everything ran smoothly.
👏 Congratulations to the Redbacks for taking out the overall win—what a fantastic effort!
It was also wonderful to see so many families and community members down at the oval—thank you for helping make it a memorable event for our students!

National Walk Safely to School Day – Friday 16th May (Week 5)
National Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual campaign and event which encourages all students, their parents and carers, to walk safely and regularly to school. It is important for children and young people to be active every day. Physical activity has many social, emotional, physical and mental health benefits. Walking to school is a great way to incorporate physical activity into a daily routine to support healthy development. Regular physical activity, especially walking, can improve self-esteem and confidence, help concentration and improve overall fitness. Encouraging kids to be active each day establishes good habits that can stay with them throughout their lives.
We will be celebrating this event at AAS by:
Having members of our SRC and local police stationed at the entrances of our school. They will be greeting our community and handing out stickers promoting this event.
The local police have offered to host a brief presentation to our students on the Downball court highlighting the importance of road safety and being aware of your surroundings when travelling to school (Friday 7:40am – 8:00am).
Alyangula Area School Council are looking for a parent representative to lead a fundraising subcommittee.
The idea is to have a school presence at markets and other community events throughout the year. In addition to raising funds for the school it also provides a great opportunity to be involved in both the school and local community.
Please contact the school on 08 8987 6366 or email alyangula.admin@education.nt.gov.au regarding further information.
